If you think phablets are too big to be smartphones, and not big enough to be tablets, then you're going to love what's coming next.
A report from ETNews in South Korea claims that Samsung plans to begin mass-producing bendable displays by the end of this year, with the intent to bring a foldable smartphone/tablet hybrid to the market in 2017.
According to the report, the upcoming phablet would bend in the middle like a wallet. The device would be a 7-inch tablet when unfurled, and a 5-inch smartphone when folded up.
The image of the supposed foldable device resembles figures included in a patent filing Samsung made in 2015.
Then again, Samsung has officially teased a foldable device before, so there could be nothing to this new report. Lee Chang-hoon, Vice President of the business strategic team at Samsung Display, said during an earnings call in January that the development of malleable screens (not phones) was going well. So, we know that Samsung is building these screens, we're just still not sure exactly what it is they're building them for.
We've reached out to Samsung for comment, but no response just yet.
